Sat in swaths of grass and summer flowers on the far coast of North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The cloud is low and thick, a have of rain with little visibility. My marks flow and run off the paper in the dreich conditions. There's a Corn Crake in the field before me. He's in the long grass, hidden and safe, throwing his call across the machair. I've been waiting for hours to catch a glimpse but he's better at this game than I am and I've yet to spot him.
